Brian Campbell knows - he did exactly that in May 2008. He did it on Facebook, and he’s sharing his knowledge with a small group of people. The methods he uses will work with any social network such as MySpace, Hi5, LinkedIn, Bebo or Zenzuu.

So how did he do it? It would be impossible to tell you all of Brian’s techniques in this short article. He actually shared everything in a 3 1/2 hour video series, which he gave away for free. However, some of the methods are quite simple and straight forward:

The most important thing is to create a network of contacts. Obviously, you can start by building up your list of friends. If you invite too many people to be your friend too quickly, Facebook will send you a warning message. Between 20 and 30 a day seems to be safe. You can find people to invite by looking through your friends’ lists of friends, and by joining groups and looking through their member lists.

When you invite someone to be your friend, Facebook allows you to send a personal message. You should definitely take advantage of this facility. Letting the person know that you share their interests makes it more likely that they will confirm your request.

You want to be in a position where other people are sending you confirmation requests. One way to do this is by making yourself visible by posting videos, photos and comments on other people’s walls. Every time you do this, all their friends get to see your posts as well. If you post good stuff, people will start asking you to be their friend.

Starting a group - and eventually a number of groups - is a great way to expand your network of contacts. Group members don’t have to be your friends, but you can start getting members into your group by inviting your friends - and asking them to invite their friends as well. Give away lots of useful information - articles, downloads and videos are all good.

All the people in your groups as well as all your friends form your network of contacts. Ultimately, you want to get people to sign up for your newsletter, so that you can contact them without going through Facebook.

You can get free access for a limited time only to Brian Campbell’s free training course, the Social Media Monetization System. He’s giving away more than 10 hours of training, which includes the 3 1/2 hour video series in which he explains how he made over $25,000 in 3 weeks on Facebook. Seats are limited, so you’ll need to take action as soon as you can.

What is Nofollow?

Copyright © 2008 Amy Nutt. Visit the original article at http://www.learnhowtodothings.com/nofollow-101-understanding-the-nofollow-tag/.

What is Nofollow?
Nofollow is an html attribute first introduced in 2005 by Google. Originally, the rel=”nofollow” attribute was added to discourage comment spam in blogs. Links with nofollow should not influence the link target’s ranking in the search engine.

From the Google Blog:

From now on, when Google sees the attribute (rel=”nofollow”) on hyperlinks, those links won’t get any credit when we rank websites in our search results. This isn’t a negative vote for the site where the comment was posted; it’s just a way to make sure that spammers get no benefit from abusing public areas like blog comments, trackbacks, and referrer lists.

From Google Answers:

“Nofollow” provides a way for webmasters to tell search engines “Don’t follow links on this page” or “Don’t follow this specific link.”

So the rel=”nofollow” attribute is a tool that can help define your most important links to the search engines.

Search Engines that support nofollow: Google, MSN Search and Yahoo!

History of Nofollow

Originally, the nofollow attribute was used on the page-level with a meta tag. It instructed search engines not to follow (crawl) outgoing links on a page. Example: see code example on main site

Another way to tell search engines not to follow (crawl) pages was to include them in a robots.txt file. But it was more difficult to prevent robots from following individual links on a link by link basis. The rel=”nofollow” attribute allows webmasters to easily instruct the search engine robot to not crawl a link.

How to Spot Nofollow Links?

You can install browser plugins, or edits to Chrome to show a highlighted color over nofollow links. You can also install a plugin to your blogging software.

Nofollow Implications

Links are now either dofollow or nofollow. From the perspective of building links to your site or blog, dofollow links will always give you more link juice. While nofollow links won’t either harm or help your link building. With that said, how you decide to build links with respect to the nofollow attribute (whether you want to get ONLY dofollow links or both to create a more natural array of links) will be an individual choice. How to use nofollow in link building strategy is a discussion for my next post!

Nofollow FAQs

How Do I Remove Nofollow?

1. Browser Plugins - highlights all links which are nofollow

- Chrome extension - add text to ChromEdit and follow directions - FireFox has a version of the ChromEdit called ChromeEdit Plus - Firefox plugin - SEO for Firefox

2. Blog Plugins

Wordpress Nofollow Plugins:

- Lucia’s Linky Love - Rewards frequent commenters, you can set how many comments must have been made to be awarded a dofollow link. - Nofollow Reciprocity - Detects nofollow links, if you link to a site and it is nofollow, your link to them also becomes nofollow. - NoFollow Free - removes the nofollow attribute from blog comments and inserts an image band at the top of your pages with the phrase: “NoFollow Free” (optional). - Dofollow - Simply install and activate, all nofollows are removed from comments and trackbacks. - Dofollow (WP Plugin) - allows nofollows to be removed from comments, pingbacks and trackbacks but you can also set a comment age limit as well as have nofollow removed left by user type.

Andy Beard has a list of more nofollow plugins; including those for Blogger, TypePad and Moveable Type.

How Do I Add Nofollow?

For more control of your inbound and outbound links, you can add tag rel=”nofollow” within any html tag. Example: see code example on main site

Does a link with nofollow count as a backlink?

Opinions vary on whether the nofollow attribute is completely discounted, or just given less relevance to the search engines. Keep in mind that how the search engines view nofollow may also vary. However, according to Google, that answer is no.

Why would I want to use nofollow on a link?

You might want to use nofollow on a link you don’t endorse, but has information you want to point to. On blog sites, you may want to give a nofollow link to spam comments and give credit to comments that are well thought out or contribute to your post.

Twitter is a website where you can post little messages, or micro-blogs, and they will be sent out to anyone that is following you.

This allows you to tell your friends or acquaintances exactly what you’re doing at a particular time, or all the time, depending on how carried away you get! This can be business or personal related, and should be a combination of the two.

If you’re building a web-based business, some of your “tweets” should be business-oriented. For instance, if you post a new entry to your blog, let your twitter followers know. If you’re watching a webinar that might be helpful to others, let them know.

At the same time, if you just post business-related activities, people are going to think that’s all you care about and you’re going to lose them. There’s a reason that web 2.0 is called “social networking”. It’s because you need to be “social”, talk about nothing or everything, and let people know who you are. I know, many people are totally wrapped up in their business, to the exclusion of pretty much anything else (including a life), but you need to find something!

Maybe you lost a bunch of weight. Maybe you’re an aspiring singer. Maybe you like to bowl, golf, play poker, or walk your dog. Whatever it is, talk about it from time to time. If people realize you’re actually a person, they’ll be more drawn to you.

Here are 7 things I do to build my twitter empire in the most efficient way possible.

1. Follow a lot of people. Here’s how I did that: I found someone that was already on Twitter that had similar interests as me, social and attraction marketing, and started following everyone he was following. When I got up to 2000, Twitter wouldn’t let me follow any more, and I assume they have a limit. However, I have seen people that are following more than 2000, so there must be some kind of criteria, probably involving how many are following you. Anyway, if you follow enough people, a bunch of them are going to follow you back. When they do, send them a tweet with a link to your blog.

2. Follow your followers. Before you know it, people are going to start following you that you didn’t follow first. Go ahead and follow them back, and send them a tweet with your blog address in it. If you can’t follow any more because you’re at the limit, delete a few that don’t have pictures and haven’t followed you. Those guys probably aren’t too serious about Twitter anyway. This brings up my next point.

3. Personalize your site. Add your picture. Write about yourself, and post a background image. Put your blog or website link on it. Remember, you need to be social - even if you’re not!

4. Tie your twitter account in with your Facebook account. You do have a Facebook account, right? If not, shame on you! Go get one! This kills 2 birds with one stone: when you post something to twitter, it automatically updates what you are doing on Facebook.

5. Download twhirl. Twhirl is a program that runs on your computer opposed to in your browser. You download it, then you can view and post tweets without being on the internet (you do still have to be connected, of course). One of the features of this cool little program is that it will shorten your long url’s for you. Just enter it in a box and click “shorten” and it will spit out a short one to save space in your 140 character tweet.

6. If you have one or more blogs, use twitterfeed. Twitterfeed automatically posts any new entries to twitter, and consequently Facebook. It works off your RSS feed and checks periodically for new blog posts, and if it sees any it sends out a tweet! This is just one more way to save yourself time and not have to remember so much. Now pensioned and getting into the social marketing, networking and media thing or at least giving it a shot - I seem to have no time.

The credit for these thoughts and the reason for this short post, goes entirely to Katherine Berry at Pajamas Media. She hit the nail right, smack on the head in her post, expressing what I’m sure a lot of us are thinking. Here’s a short excerpt of Katherine’s post ….

Even as I sit there trying to wrack my brain for something positive to say about the IM sender’s blog entry, I glance at Twitter and see that she’s announced to the world that she’s about to take a shower. Phew! I dash off a quick “LOL. Nice!” in the IM screen before closing it and launching my email client.

So I wade through the FriendFeed and my direct messages on Twitter. I buzz through my email and see that a good portion of the very same folks whose updates I’d just spent the past hour reading have also sent me email, so I dash off brief replies where appropriate. Just as I’m about to congratulate myself for having waded through all of that, another IM pops up from the same sender as earlier: “Did u see that vid I just blogged?” Crap. When do I get to spend my day on me?

What’s stealing your time?

Anyway, it’s taken me ages to convince myself that I really needed to give Twitter a go as I didn’t really see any relevance in me knowing or anyone sharing what they - all across the other side of the globe was doing i.e. walking their ferret or pet mouse or just getting on or off their plane from or to wherever. Just didn’t get it - but the penny is beginning to drop ever so slowly.

So, as I’ve just started using Twitter, I’ve been looking for a way to use Skype instead of GTalk, not that there’s anything wrong with GTalk, but I was surprised that Skype wasn’t an option. And low and behold - PacificIT has already explained how to Twitter using Skype. How neat is that!

How to Twitter from Skype

Here’s a little secret no one seems to know about (or at least before this post!). There is a Skype robot which will post to your Twitter account. Here are the simple instructions:

Add twitter4skype as a contact.

Type the following as a single chat message to twitter4skype:
/account (shift+return)
yourtwitteraccountname (shift+return)
yourtwitteraccountpassword (shift+return)

The system should return: twitter4skype Registration complete!

The next time you write a chat message to twitter4skype, the entry will appear on your account and you’ll receive your friends’ twitters in Skype.

That’s it. Enjoy!

Copyright © 2008 Starbrite. Visit the original article at http://www.learnhowtodothings.com/social-marketing-equals-distance-blinders-and-cyber-masochism/.

Most, if not all online business owners, are always on the lookout for ways of getting more website traffic and earning more from their social marketing efforts. Stands to reason that a good social networking and marketing campaign should equals more visitors and revenue. And it can be done realistically via the vast number of media streams available, taking advantage ethically of all there is to offer using Web 2.0 methods. But heck - you have to really know what you’re doing and annoying as it may be - it’s here that a majority of online business’ go wrong.

At times, it’s hard to imagine that all these social marketing techniques will sink in and become second nature - and small wonder, because as soon as you’ve learned one set of social marketing skills, it’s about face and there suddenly appears, as if by magic a new method of doing things that makes all else obsolete. Why do we follow these five minute wonders and distance blinders? Do we enjoy this cyber-masochism, beating ourselves up and using our money on often useless tools? My guess is - yes, as we all fall over ourselves to get more of it. Guilty as charged!

We’re done with following the five minute wonders like a lamb to the slaughter. Done with buying into the never ending jargon and products that don’t deliver the goods, you know the type - they look good from a distance and last 5 minutes. Well OK, it’s not fair to be collective and paint each of them with the same colour brush, as some have real products with substance, but let me say from experience - they are not in the majority.

Our reason for giving up on the distance blinding five minute wonders? Simple. We’re tired of trying to make a buck here and there, we want to build something that’s going to last - not a here today gone tomorrow kind of business. Substance that’s what we want - don’t you?

That’s why we joined the ranks of those that are serious about establishing an ethical, long lasting business online and for the first time, we actually got results - after only 5 hours of being a member, and putting one of Jack’s idea’s into action - we got results. After struggling for so long, we have to say that getting results feels - oh so good. It motivates, inspires, energizes and gives back a feeling of ‘I’m not stupid after all’.

And that is what we feel Jack Humphrey is all about - he knows his social marketing stuff and he truly does, what he doesn’t know - probably isn’t worth knowing. Apart from that - he’s easy on the ears and explains things in an easy to understand way, says it straight out and you may not like what you hear, but that’s one of the beauty’s of being a member of Jack’s outfit - constructive interaction with members.

There is so much reading stuff in the membership area, we can’t even begin to explain what there is to read, learn, listen to and see on video and not forgetting the members forum, where there’s a huge amount of information, that used in the right context will help any member establish themselves online for a very long time. Moderators and forum admin know their stuff too, he’s got himself a good team - it’s a real pleasure reading through threads and seeing that people are actually getting results from using these social marketing techniques.

Any one with an interest in learning how social marketing is really done can join - heck at the time of this writing you can even join for $1 for 3 days if you want to test the waters. Without wanting to sound cheasy, as this is as far away from cheasy as you can get - this is probably one of the best social marketing membership sites that deliver the goods and then some, at a price that is far beyond value for money.

So, does Social Marketing Equals Distance Blinders and Cyber-Masochism? Heck no. This is a learning curve already giving results to so many members, and one that we would not want to miss.
