If you go to sites like Digg, you'll see that many of the highest ranked articles are in this style. I had an experience related to this recently. I wrote some articles and submitted them to directories. There was only one I wrote in list form, and I thought this wasn't as good as the others. Yet that's the one that was taken up by publishers, while as of this writing the others have not been. It’s true that the list format is very popular.
